ATLAS of the WORLD
Documentation and Instructions for use
Programmed by Kenneth Calman, 7050 W. Taylor St.,
Phoenix Az. 85043 phone (602) 936-5205
TO BEGIN:
Using the World Atlas is simplest if you are using two 5 1/4" floppy
disk drives. After booting up with MS-DOS 2.2 or newer, simply put disk
A in drive A and disk B in drive B. Type WORLD and press the carriage
return, or ENTER key.
After a brief introductory graphic, you will see on your screen the
WORLD ATLAS MENU, or main menu of the program. Choices given are:
1. Search by Country name.
2. Search by City name.
3. Search by Continent.
4. Make comparisons.
5. Physical World Menu.
6. Countries listed.
7. Atlas Trivia Menu.
8. Quit, go to DOS.
Select Search by Country name by typing the number 1 and pressing the
ENTER key. Do not type a period after the number of your selection.
The screen changes to the Search by Country Name section. You are
prompted to type the name of a country in the selection box. Options
given on this page are H to read help and notes about the atlas, and R
to return to the Main Menu.
To search for a country, capitalize the first letter of the country
only, and press ENTER.
If you are unsure of spelling, choose selection 6 from the main menu and
you will see a list of all countries included in this atlas. Spell your
search request exactly as you see it listed
After a quick search on the disk, a new screen presents you with the
results of your search: the country you selected, the continent on which
it is located, the Capitol City, area in square miles, most recent
population, and a list of each country or body of water that borders
your selection.
A border country placed inside a set of parentheses is not connected by
land but separated from your selection by a body of water.
On the bottom of the data screen you are given several options:
L will return an alphabetical list of all cities over 100,000 population
in the country you selected.
H takes you to the help/notes text.
M returns a list of all the major landforms in your selected country,
including mountains, rivers, lakes and islands.
R returns to the main World Atlas Menu.
ENTER, or carriage return, goes to the prompt for another country
search.
Select Search by City Name by typing 2 and pressing the ENTER key.
You will now see a screen similar to the Country Search screen, except
the prompt is to enter the name of a city. Again, capitalize only the
first letter of the city, and press the ENTER key.
Throughout the atlas, local spelling has been used to give place names
"flavor". The result is, however, some city names can't be used in the
search section without using the non-English ASCII characters so the
computer will recognize it. For exampl e, Godthab must be spelled with
ASCII character 134 in place of the a, or the computer will not find it.
Once the computer has found your selection, it returns the country that
city is located in and the population of the city. This population is
likely to be the metropolitan area rather than strictly within the
boundaries of the city.
The cursor is ready for another selection.
From the main menu, select Search by Continent by entering 3.
You now see a list of the 7 continents of the world and three major
island groups. Type in the continent or group exactly as it is listed,
and ENTER.
The option to return to the main menu is also given here by typing R.
A continent or island group selection returns a list of all the
countries occupying that continent or island group. If the list is more
than one page, it is remembered and can be re-listed without waiting for
another search.
Pressing ENTER at the end of the list returns you to the Continent
selection page.
Return to the main WORLD ATLAS MENU and choose comparisons by typing 4
and pressing the ENTER key.
You now see a format with a prompt to enter the name of a country. Type
a country name, capitalizing the first letter only, and ENTER.
The computer returns quickly the last known population of your
selection, it's area in square miles, and it's population density, a
handy little figure. You are now prompted to enter the name of a second
country for comparisons against the first.
The computer not only returns the area, population and density of
selection 2, but has compared country 1 to country 2 and country 2 to
country 1 in all three areas!
At this point you are given the option of returning to the main WORLD
ATLAS MENU by entering R, or pressing ENTER to make another comparison.
From the WORLD ATLAS MENU, type 5 to move to the PHSICAL WORLD MENU.
This menu gives several options:
1. List Mountains.
2. List Lakes.
3. List Rivers/Find River.
4. List Islands.
5. List Oceans.
6. Return to WORLD ATLAS MENU.
Type 1 and press ENTER. The computer gives you a new screen and lists
the 235 highest mountains in the world, with rank, elevation in feet,
and the country(ies) the mountain is located in.
ENTER at the end of the list returns to PHYSICAL WORLD MENU.
ENTER 2.
The computer returns a list of the 46 largest lakes in the world,
specifying if saltwater, giving rank in the world, area in square miles,
and the country(ies) of location.
ENTER 3 for Rivers.
You're now given a choice to search for a particular river or list all
rivers.
Type L and ENTER.
The program lists the 114 longest rivers in the world, giving the rank
of each, the length in miles, and the country(ies) through which the
river flows in the direction of flow.
At the end of this list you are given the options to return to PHYSICAL
WORLD MENU by typing R or search for a particular river by typing S.
Type S and ENTER.
You are now prompted to select a river for search. Type a river name,
capitalizing the first letter only, and press ENTER. The computer
returns data on your selection, including the general direction of flow,
the country that river exits at its mout h, the body of water it feeds,
its world rank in length, and its length in miles.
Note: The exit country and body of water fed are given for the entire
river system. This data may appear inacurrate if your selection is a
tributary of a larger river system. For instance, the Gila River does
not directly leave Mexico and enter the Pacific Ocean. It actually
empties into the Colorado River, which does.
Press ENTER to return to PHYSICAL WORLD MENU. From here type 4 and
press ENTER.
The program returns a list of the 66 largest islands of the world, with
rank in size, country(ies) located, and area in square miles.
Press ENTER at the end of the list to return to PHYSICAL WORLD MENU.
To list Oceans type 5 and press ENTER.
The computer responds by listing 22 seas and oceans, giving the world
rank in area, area in square miles, and greatest known depth.
ENTER to return to PHYSICAL WORLD MENU.
Type 6 and ENTER to return to main WORLD ATLAS MENU.
From the WORLD ATLAS MENU type 6 to select Countries listed.
The program lists the 202 political entities of the world in alpabetical
order. Use the spelling from this list when searching for data on
individual countries.
The pages of this list are remembered in RAM so you can see them again
without waiting for another search and sort.
ENTER returns to WORLD ATLAS MENU.
From here type 7 and ENTER.
You are now presented with 3 choices on the ATLAS TRIVIA MENU:
1. Global characteristics.
2. Atlas Trivia Quiz.
3. Return to main WORLD ATLAS MENU.
Type 1 and ENTER.
The program now displays a text file which gives data on the dimensions
of our planet, records of temperature, rainfall, etc. This is required
reading for success in the quiz in the next part.
ENTER to return to ATLAS TRIVIA MENU.
Now type 2 and ENTER for the Trivia Quiz.
The first page of the quiz gives an introduction and instructions how to
continue. An option is also given to return to the ATLAS TRIVIA MENU by
ENTERing R.
Continue the quiz by pressing ENTER.
A new page asks a numbered question and provides a block for your
answer. The correct answer can be found by using the various sections
of the atlas. Type your answer in the block and press ENTER.
A wrong answer results in a low-frequency sound, "Sorry...", and an
option to sneak a look at the answers by ENTERing A. Press ENTER to
restate the question and try again.
Your correct answer results in a high-frequency tone and a note of
congratulations. ENTER for the next question. After 10 questions and
after 20 questions you are prompted to end the quiz or continue.
At the end of the 30 questions, ENTER returns your time score on the
quiz. ENTER again to return to the ATLAS TRIVIA MENU.
The questions in the quiz are designed to encourage use of the various
features of the atlas. Some are inspired by current events around the
world.
The computerized Atlas of the World is based largely on data obtained
from the Rand McNally Contemporary World Atlas, copyright 1984. Other
data was obtained from the New Standard Encyclopedia, copyright 1980 by
Standard Educational Corporation, Chic ago, and Time-Life Books' Library
of Nations, copyright 1987.
